How do I transfer my pictures without formatting my card?

I have an SDHC memory card, and want to transfer my pictures onto my PC so I can print them out. When I put the card into my computers slot, it says that I first have to format it. Is there any way I can go around this? These are irreplaceable pictures. Thanks for any help
