Do marupa trees (Simarouba amara) grow in the rainforest?

I know that these trees are used in South America for making dugout canoes that travel the Amazon. Do they grow directly in the rain forest there, or must they be brought in from somewhere else? Basically, I'm trying to find out if they grow beneath the canopy of the rain forest or not.
