You have described Clifford Simak's books almost exactly. He wrote "city" a book about the dogs and the odd stories they told the pups about this creature called "Man"who some scholars doubted ever existed. There were numerous other books. The names of some were Goblin reservation, "They walked like men", The trouble with tycho" and several others I think you may enjoy! I advise you to do a websearch on Simak.
